Working with the UQ Innovation Group

Interacting with the workshops in UQ Innovate is a great opportunity to learn about practical engineering and get a taste of the design and manufacturing environment outside university.

While the UQ Innovate makerspace provides equipment and expertise for doing your own manufacturing, several other services exist for professional manufacturing.

The information on this page will prepare you for the best possible interaction while having your parts manufactured, and it's important you read and follow these instructions carefully.

Advanced Prototyping Workshop (APW)

APW provides metalworking, machining and fabrication services performed by experienced staff. The first step to getting a job started with the APW is to submit a job request. This will send an email to the APW team and start the process.

Depending on the job, you may need to provide additional documentation.

Tips on supporting documentation

If your job involves manufacturing a new part, you will need to provide certain engineering documentation to communicate with the workshop staff. The APW expects the following information to be provided:

  1. Bill of Materials (BoM): This is a list of parts you want manufactured or purchased off-the-shelf. The BoM should include the quantity and material of each part that you want manufactured. Part names should be the same as drawing and CAD filenames, for ease of identification. The BoM can be submitted as a spreadsheet, a list in an email or simply a line of text in the case of a single part.
  2. CAD Models: Your CAD design files should be submitted in a standard boundary representation format such as STEP. CAD filenames should be as listed in any drawings and BoM. Please note that STL files are not suitable for machining.
  3. 2D Drawings: 2D drawings are required to supplement CAD data with additional manufacturing details, including tolerances, annotations and surface finishes.
